Activity 4 . 1 . 1 Measuring stem and leaf growth Basic observations on growth are most effective when this is rapid. Marking young leaves on each shoot with dots of quick-drying paint or correcting-fluid provides landmarks for measurements which will usually yield clear results if carried out weekly. Children need to understand clearly that stem growth is measured by length, whereas leaf growth is measured by area.
