The Beckham Rule

In MLS, the highest salary a player can be paid due to salary cap restrictions is $350,000. So, when the MLS wanted to branch out and look elsewhere outside their comfort zone for talent, nothing in the United States could entice big name players. However, when David Beckham showed interest in the Los Angeles Galaxy, the MLS tried to adjust to hasten his move over. Thus, the Designated Player Rule was created, or commonly known as the Beckham Rule.

David Beckham and the Galaxy lead midway through MLS season

The Los Angeles Galaxy have played 17 of their 34 games this season, and halfway through, they top the table with 31 points.  FC Dallas are the closest to them with 25 points, and Dallas also have two games in hand.  Despite Beckham’s mere one goal in the 14 games he’s played, he’s still seems to be one of the top players currently in the league, having the second most assists in the league with seven.  Beckham’s goal was scored on a free kick well outside the box.  He curved it into the top corner, and gave the keeper no chance.  However, Beckham isn’t the only player in the MLS Read On..
